We're off on tour again, traveling round the country with the delightful Latt Children's Theatre Company. This week we're in Daegu and tonight we found one of the hidden treasures of Daegu cuisine...
We're staying in 방촌동 (Bangchon-dong) and after exploring the area we came upon a curious establishment that we felt we had to try. 북성로 우동 불고기 (Buksong street noodles and grilled meat) serves a speciality that can only be found in Daegu. For 3,500 won you get yourself a bowl of noodles and some grilled pork, simple yet ever so tasty...
The pork is twice cooked (pre-prepared and then grilled to order) and has an exquisite charred smokey taste. You don't get a whole lot for the cheap, cheap price, but for a mere 5,000 won you can get an extra plate (pictured above).
The udong noodles are fairly standard, but the broth is homemade and comforting. It feels like home cooking and the combination of grilled pork and broth works very well.
We were greedy and ordered the 부추전 (chive pancake). 5,000 won for a glorious mess of egg, batter, chives and chillies.
Plus we went on to get the 고갈비 (6,000 won), a spatchcocked mackerel, grilled to perfection and then smothered with sweet chilli sauce, raw garlic and chillies. Not too spicy, the sweetness of the gochujang works well with the salty mackerel creating a rather addictive fishy addition to the meal.
This small place is a little off the beaten track, but well worth a visit if you're looking for cheap eats with a unique Daegu flavour. If you speak Korean give them a call on 951-3534 for directions. A perfect place to satisfy your meat and carb urges without breaking the bank. Just be warned, they don't serve rice...
